What Causes Dyslexia?

So exactly what causes dyslexia, you may ask?

Depending on the source of your information about dyslexia, you may discover myriads of theories and opinions on the subject.

Following are several of the possible causes of dyslexia according to numerous theorists:

  • Trauma related dyslexia
This refers to learning problems resulting from an accident or some other type of brain trauma. Car accidents, falls, and other head trauma fall under this category. Some believe that inflammation resulting from immunizations can also trigger learning disabilities.

  • Developmental Dyslexia
Sometimes referred to as secondary dyslexia, this theory proposes that a crisis occurs during fetal development that causes dyslexia. This might be related to hormonal changes or chemical exposure.

  • Neurological deficit or misfiring
This may be explained in any number of ways, but generally refers to a lack of communication or coordination between the right and left hemispheres of the brain.

  • Genetic/Hereditary Factors
It is not uncommon for dyslexia to run in families, thus pointing to a possible hereditary cause.

  • Unknown
Many admit that we just don't know for sure what precipitates dyslexia.

Knowing the cause may offer limited benefit to those supporting the dyslexic child or adult (for instance, limiting future toxic exposures, etc.)

Yet, once dyslexia is established via testing, the attention turns to the problems displayed and how to remedy those issues.

Overcoming dyslexia is our ultimate goal!
